Dorchester Film Society held its first meeting and showed its first film in 1959. Since then it has shown about eighteen films each year, and it now has 250 members. The season runs from September to Easter, and two films are shown each month Most of the films are shown in the Corn Exchange in Dorchester but about six are shown in the Plaza Cinema in Trinity St, Dorchester.
The society’s committee members choose the films to be shown each season and they try to get a balance of English language and foreign films from a variety of countries. These include feature films and the occasional documentary. Although most of the films are recent releases from time to time there we show golden oldies. At every AGM we give our members the chance to suggest films that they would like to see in the following season. If you have any ideas for an upcoming film, please let us know.
Since 2004, we have shown 144 films from 51 different countries and our top country is France with 49 films.
